Youth Opportunity Center
Location: Compton, California
Drugs and gang activity are rife in Compton, a city located in southern Los Angeles County, California. It is not surprising, therefore, that the city has a reputation for being one of the most dangerous cities in the United States. That, however, may now be changing.
Now is the time to prepare the next generation to bring about real, positive change in Compton, and INMED is helping lead the way.
As part of this positive change, INMED has begun planning for a youth opportunity center that would give thousands of children access to resources and opportunities that can reshape their future—including education and support for teen parents, financial literacy classes to lay the foundation for responsibility and future success, job skills training and mentoring for at-risk youth. There are few safe places in the city for children and youth to play and socialize, particularly while parents are at work, so the youth center would provide opportunities for physical activities in a safe, engaging environment.
The center would offer after-school and weekend activities mainly for youth, but INMED realizes that supporting the whole family gives youth a greater opportunity for success. To that end, the center would provide opportunities for parents and community members such as classes in parenting, English and computer skills.
