Embracing Our Youth Mentoring program has formed a group on Facebook. The Embracing Our Youth program matches at-risk kids and teens with an volunteer adult mentor who serves as a positive role model. The main goal of the program is to break the cycle of imprisonment; all of the kids in the program have at least one parent who is incarcerated or has a history of incarceration. Mentors focus on building a one-on-one relationship with their mentees, showing them new places and exposing them to new experiences. Mentors meet with their mentees 3-4 times a month and commit to the youth for at least one year.
Most of the mentees live in the Compton/South Los Angeles area, with a few in the San Pedro/Long Beach area. Mentors must be at least 18 years old and agree to a background check.
