The Healthy Babies program is designed to reduce maternal, perinatal and infant morbidity and mortality in nine districts of the Region of Ucayali in the Amazon jungle of Peru. Targeted beneficiaries include more than 100,000 women of reproductive age and 53,000 children under age 5 in 567 communities.
Reductions in morbidity and mortality will be achieved by increasing the use, coverage and quality of care of maternal and newborn services provided by the Ministry of Health (MOH), non-governmental organizations, community-based volunteers, and traditional birth attendants. The Healthy Babies program uses a community-based approach to ensure the continuum of care required by a late stage pregnant woman throughout labor, delivery and the neonatal period.
The Home Based Life Saving Skills (HBLSS) strategy is one of the key interventions of the Healthy Babies program. HBLSS improves access and quality of maternal and newborn care by providing training and support to community and family members to save maternal and newborn lives. INMED’s partners for Healthy Babies include PRISMA (a Peruvian NGO) and the American College of Nurse Midwives.
