Obesity is recognized as a growing problem not only in the U.S. but in developing countries, as well. In Spring 2008, INMED received funding through the Pan American Health and Education Foundation for an innovative pilot project, Lyrics for Life. This project, to be launched in the Trenchtown community of Kingston, Jamaica, represents a collaborative effort among local schools, government ministries, foundations and private sector partners to reduce obesity and form a solid foundation for future healthy lifestyles.
The Lyrics for Life project incorporates classroom nutrition education, cultivation of school gardens to promote increased consumption of fruits and vegetables, opportunities for organized physical activity in schools and the community, and healthy lifestyles message communication through music and lyrics developed by participating students, building on Jamaica’s rich musical heritage. The project is also linked with INMED’s IAMusic program, utilizing the guitars donated by the Gibson Foundation for that youth development and music program.
