A case manager with MotherNet LA, a member of the South LA Best Babies Collaborative, Emily began working with Amanda two months after her baby was born. A willing Amanda, who asked that her real name not be used, was quickly enrolled in the BBC, and she and Emily began to work on a plan to improve the lives of mother and daughter.

The Marley Effect
INMED Partnerships for Children, based in Sterling, reaches out to improve the lives of children worldwide. IMED partnered with the Gibson Foundation and the Bob Marley Foundation to bring 25 guitars to school children in Jamaica. Two of the schools in the program are in Trenchtown, where reggae music legend Bab Marley grew up.

Changing the World, One Child at a Time
Linda Pfeiffer was poised, 20 years ago, doctorate in hand, to spend her life in the halls of academe.

She chose instead to found INMED Partnerships For Children. The Sterling-based nonprofit focuses on the needs of children, "and it's all about partnerships between the private and public sectors, to make a difference in the lives of kids around the world," Pfeiffer said.

INMED is best known in Loudoun for its outreach to pregnant women and teens, new parents and their children - MotherNet/Healthy families Loudoun. Its effect is felt more in developing countries in Latin America and Africa.

GE Foundation and INMED

GE Foundation Strengthening Primary Education in Brazil
The GE Foundation and GE Elfun Volunteers have teamed up with INMED to support an innovative program in Rio de Janeiro that will improve children's health, nutrition and education, and in the process lay the foundation for a lifetime of learning. The "Children as Agents of Change" project will benefit nearly 2,000 students (ages 4-14) in local public schools by integrating social topics - such as citizenship, self-esteem, hygiene care, nutrition and preventive health - into the curriculum.

Catching Families Before They Fall
For Deysi Marquez, a Salvadoran immigrant living in Leesburg, the emergency Caesarean delivery of her premature twin sons in May 2001 was a frightening and traumatic event.

Alex and Cristian, born during her 26th week of pregnancy, had heart problems and were immediately put on oxygen. Their father had returned to El Salvador to be with his family after an earthquake, and she had no way to communicate with him. And because she spoke no English, she had no way to communicate with her doctors, either.

More than 350,000 children across Brazil have been freed from debilitating and sometimes life-threatening intestinal parasites by an innovative public-private program led by INMED and its partners, stressing treatment and critical health education.
