Domestic Violence Education and Support

   Location: Compton, California

Nationwide, one in four women has experienced domestic violence, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. In Compton, however, the reality is even starker. For example, nearly all of the teens in INMED’s perinatal home visiting program  have been a victim of domestic violence perpetrated by their partners or family members.

To address the effects of domestic violence, INMED offers education, support groups, and case management services. A certified domestic violence instructor teaches a curriculum developed by INMED specifically for this target population, addressing:

  • The types of domestic violence and what constitutes domestic violence
  • How to respond to domestic violence, including developing an emergency escape plan
  • A life without violence and the role of self-esteem in healthy relationships
  • The impact of domestic violence on children and how to prevent the cycle of intergenerational violence
  • Available resources in the community

In addition to the classes, those victims facing particularly severe situations and who need one-on-one assistance are provided with case management services in order to take the next steps in resolving their domestic violence situations. These services include helping victims arrange for domestic violence counseling and secure shelter in order to leave their abusive environments. Furthermore, case managers discuss detailed emergency and safety plans, and help youth victims of intimate partner violence and sexual assault navigate the legal system to receive shelter, restraining orders and protective services.

To date, more than 1,200 teenagers and adults have attended classes and support groups and more than 80 have received case management services. More than 90% of these participants have made significant, concrete progress towards resolving their domestic violence situations, including leaving abusive partners, securing protective orders and seeking counseling.
